Distribute the Wealth of Divine Name, Make life Richer - Baba Hardev Singh ji Maharaj

(Each breath granted by God is precious, but human life becomes all the more valuable if adorned with the wealth of Divine Name.  Let’s attain this true wealth, distribute it and become richer, says Nirankari Baba Hardev Singh Ji Maharaj.)

Each moment of our life spent in the company of saints is considered meaningful, useful and important, because it is here that we are inspired to get attached with Truth, unite with God and live life adorned with divine virtues. We may live a long life, but the moments that are spent while remembering God, realizing His presence and making Him the base of our life are really auspicious, a blessing.

Saints, therefore, always pray to God for dwelling in their heart as well as mind so that they spend every moment of their life in God-awareness.  They describe Divine Name as the ocean which, like fish, they would not like to leave even for a moment.  They compare the Truth with wealth which they would like not only to attain in abundance but distribute further also.  In material world, people are not prepared to share their wealth even with their brothers and sisters.  Devotees, however, feel happy to share this true wealth, the wealth of Divine Name with every fellow-being since they trust that by distributing, this wealth increases only and they render their life richer and more prosperous.

No doubt, human life is valuable by itself; each breath granted by God is precious.  But it finds its value in real terms when adorned with the wealth of Divine Name, when one unites with God and imbibes divine virtues. This makes life beautiful and hence all the more valuable. The soul also finds its Supreme Source and gets liberated from transmigration from one body to another; it attains salvation.

Devotees, therefore, not only pray to unite with God themselves but inspire others too to get linked with the Almighty.  Then, they would also like to remain linked with God and warn others also against getting distanced from the Almighty.  Separation puts one to disadvantages only.  Even a branch or fruit separated from the tree gets withered and decays.

Saints understand that getting linked with God is important, but more important is to remain linked with Him rather constantly.  Like we need petrol to start a vehicle, but we need the fuel to keep it moving also.  Once the supply of petrol is disconnected, the vehicle comes to a standstill and even its starting loses significance.  That is why saints attach importance to getting linked with God and then maintain this link; they would never wish to be disconnected.  They would seek and attain God-knowledge, but then they would also like to adopt it in life, experience it, live it.  They would like to see that their outlook and their feelings are hued in the colour of God-knowledge.  They would like to spend every moment of their life while fully conscious of the presence of God in everything they do.

God-knowledge is not a wealth to be kept in a safe or a locker. It must be used. Otherwise, we shall remain as poor as we are.  God-knowledge is important not as an academic or intellectual achievement but as something to be used, lived and experienced.  It must be shared and distributed also.

And while sharing and distributing this wealth, only words will not be sufficient.  Once I read a slogan written on the wall of a church.  It said, “Spread the gospel everyday but use the words if most necessary.”  You can create a lasting impression only if you adopt your message in practical life. Only then you will be able to convince others about the desirability and utility of what you seek to teach or preach.

This, however, does not mean that words have no importance at all.  Pleasant and sweet language has its own significance, its own impression.  In fact, it becomes a part of one’s behavour which is so important to convince others about the usefulness of what you want to preach.

We talk about certain principles accepted as true since ages. Certainly they are accepted because people adopted and followed them and established their infallibility.  We call such people as men of principles.  They are able to show the right direction, the right path to others also, simply because they have lived those principles.

It is such people who point out that even the spiritually enlightened persons are in trouble if they deviate from the path of devotion. Devotion is a sacred means that keeps the devotee (Bhakt) linked with God (Bhagwant). God-knowledge is, therefore, like a candle whose flame has to be protected from worldly winds.  We use our palms to save it from the current of air, to keep it burning. Otherwise, the flame may start flickering. Similarly, our devotion to God has to be safeguarded from worldly forces that are always likely to shake our faith. That’s why we are advised to seek the company of saints. They guide and help us to keep ourselves steadfast in our faith and devotion to God.

Saints, Gurus and prophets, therefore, have always given the two-fold message.  One, they wake up those who are sleeping in ignorance and advise them to remove the darkness of ignorance with the light of God-knowledge.  And people who do listen to their message, move in the direction they show and seek the company of saints. They attain God-knowledge and become spiritually enlightened.

Then, they have the message for those who are already blessed with God-knowledge.  They are advised to live it, experience it. No doubt they suffered from ignorance until they attained God-knowledge, but now that they are blessed with this divine wealth, they must use it and be happy and prosperous here and hereafter.  Let them lead the rest of their life with love, compassion, humility, tolerance, contentment, large -  heartedness and sweet language.  Let them make their dealings with others clean and honest and shun all kinds of vices and negative feelings.  Let them prove with their behaviour that their life is beautiful. Only then they will be able to motivate others to follow this path of truth, faith and devotion, distribute this wealth of Divine Name and become richer.

Why Man is in Distress - By: Baba Hardev Singh Ji Maharaj

Published in Times of India article:
His Holiness Article published in Times of India on Why Man is in Distress
Divine masters never opposed material progress. They, however, did say that increased possession of worldly materials might bring suffering if it were not accompanied by spiritual enlightenment, says Nirankari Baba Hardev Singh Ji Maharaj.

Man today has made tremendous progress. He has acquired vast material resources, powerful appliances and instruments. There is no dearth of goods that make life comfortable. Even luxuries are available in abundance. But even then we find man in distress. He does not find his life and property safe or secure. Violence may erupt anywhere anytime. Hence, fear keeps him deprived of the peace within. Tension tends to prevail all the time due to one reason or the other.

Who is responsible for this state of affairs? The answer is : 'Man himself'. Along with numerous achievements in the field of science and technology, he has made all kinds of weapons also. We have bombs that can create havoc on the earth and in the air. And human mind is so unpredictable that it may trigger any weapon any time anywhere quoting any reason. Obviously that is what is keeping man under constant fear and tension.

Why weapons alone? Humanity is sought to be split by man through all kinds of boundaries and walls erected in the name of caste, creed and colour, language, religion and culture. He is shut out from the reality of the world outside. He is cut off from the rest of the world and finds himself in utter bewilderment. As you know criminals are kept in closed cells. Behind the bars, they are cut off from the world. Each and every moment of their life, therefore, passes like hell. Man has also created this hell for himself. He thinks everything for himself, for the fulfillment of his own interests. The result is conflict between man and man, distance from each other, pain and suffering.

All that is created by God is meant for all. But man divides even natural resources when they come under his control. We find water being divided. There have been disputes over the distribution of water resulting in bloodshed. Had man been able to control the air, he would not have allowed the wind to blow from one country into another. The same would have been the case with sunshine.

Guided by selfish motives, man takes such steps that saints describe him as an animal: Kartoot Pashu Ki, Manush Jat. His actions are that of animals while by appearance he looks to be a human being. We lock our houses and shops. In other countries, people go in for alarm system. Why?

Do we take these steps to guard our lives and properties from animals? No, we need them against man. He appears to be man whereas he is not. His actions are guided by animal instincts. We find how one animal pounces upon the other to snatch a piece of meat. The same is the condition of man, it appears.

The farmer puts manure in order to make the land fertile and the crop healthy. But what happens is that along with the crop there is lot of unintended and superfluous growth of grass, etc. A wise farmer removes this unwanted growth before pouring any more fertilizer into the land, because he knows that otherwise it will be consumed by the wild growth and the actual crop will starve correspondingly. This is exactly what is happening in human world. Along with the material progress are growing the unwanted feelings of jealousy and narrow-mindedness. The vices like passion, anger, greed, attachment and ego tend to destroy the peace of mind for himself as well as others. Unless these negative factors are weeded out, human energies will get wasted in bad deeds, producing nothing but destruction.

God has blessed man with body with physical strength and intellect to be used for good purposes. In fact these qualities have been given by God to every human being. Then where does this difference come from? Everybody knows that fire is quite useful to us in many ways. We use it in the kitchen and cook all types of food. It is used in industrial units also. But it will be an utter misuse of fire if it is applied to burn the houses of others, burn the people themselves. Like this, all human energies and virtues stand misused, when we utilize these gifts of God to harm others. No object or power is bad by itself, bad is its misuse.

Not that man is facing such a horrible situation only because of those who run after material world. Those who claim to be above Maya (worldly objects) and boast of their being religious, too are in no way better. Almost every day we read in the newspapers reports about the bloodshed of innocent people committed in the name of religion and spiritual masters. No religion, no spiritual master, no holy person does preach or endorse such killings. Even then there is bloodshed in the name of religion. People quarrel over the very name of God. A man who describes the Almighty as Ram is found to be ready to fight with the other who calls it Allah. Why do they fight when Ram and Allah are one and the same? This is so because we have not allowed the divine light to enter our minds, enter our lives. Since we are away from God, worldly improvements too lead to destruction. The reason for disputes in the name of religion is, of course, ignorance.

The Spiritual masters teach us that man must stumble or fumble at some place or the other, if he forgets this God - Nirankar and attaches importance to material wealth only. Take for instance a building. We all know that houses are meant for men. If we start thinking the other way round, give priority to houses or consider that men are meant for houses, it will be our mistake. Shoes are meant for the feet; not that the feet are meant for shoes. This is a question of attaching importance, giving priority. We must give top priority to God, to know it, to realize it.

Divine masters never opposed material progress. They, however, did say that increased possession of worldly materials might bring suffering if it were not accompanied by spiritual enlightenment. If God enters one's life, the feelings of hatred, jealousy and pride disappear and then all the material progress of the world becomes a source of joy. Once the distance between man and God goes, the distance between man and man goes too. Nobody appears to be an enemy, nobody remains an alien. There are no conflicts, no tension, no distress

TRANSLATION OF WORDS INTO DEEDS DISTINGUISHES SAINTS

Published in Times of India (Dated: July 24, 2013):

TRANSLATION OF WORDS INTO DEEDS DISTINGUISHES SAINTS
                                                                - Nirankari Baba Hardev Singh Ji

Words in themselves are not enough. If humility is talked about, it has to be practiced.  We have to love others; mere talk of love will not suffice.  If we talk about large-heartedness, large-hearted we must become…..  Here is a holy discourse by Nirankari Baba Hardev Singh Ji, abridged by Dr D.K. Mehta, UK.

Wherever I go, I find the lovers of Truth embracing spirituality.  Their lives are rooted in the love of God.  They follow the path of humanity, with compassion and care for the welfare of others.  They cherish these common feelings, wherever they happen to be, whichever language they speak, and whichever culture they may belong to.  They all share the same sentiments of humility, love and selfless service.  Their lives are exemplary because they translate the teachings of the holy beings into deeds.

The advice is to walk in their footsteps, but we tend to do the opposite.  We would rather walk in front and ignore them.  As a result, instead of imbibing love and humility, a false sense of pride, anger and conflict rule us.

The enjoins of prophets, sages and seers can liberate us, enlighten us and make us the means to enlighten others.  They fill us with nectar and cleanse our minds.  Their purifying words help to keep us on the right path.  They help us to shun impurities and undesirable thoughts so that we do not soil ourselves or malign others; and do not poison our own lives, or the lives of others. For in so doing, lies the welfare of the whole world.

Although this wisdom has been there for ages, man has preferred to follow the path of destruction, which not only harms him, but harms others too.  His words and actions damage and poison the atmosphere, causing restlessness and upheaval.

Those who love the Truth have always eschewed these negative tendencies.  They rise above narrow-mindedness and focus on self-reform and self-refinement.  They do not entertain jealousy or contemplate any thoughts of denigrating others.  They have always given top priority to this noble goal and coloured their   words with the acts of deeds.  Such a refinement of the self lends a pleasant aroma to the environment and beautifies the surroundings.

Words are important only if acted upon, and based on love, faith and devotion.  This is what distinguishes the saints.  Although they may not be with us any more, their fragrance still touches us today; they have become worthy of our respect and honour.  They attained lofty heights not with mere words, but with practical action.

Words in themselves are not enough.  If humility is talked about, it has to be practiced.  We have to love others; mere talk of love will not suffice.  If we talk about large-heartedness, large-hearted we must become.  People can gauge our intentions; we cannot hide them for long.  We must, therefore, watch what we say and always exercise control.

We must not forget that God is with us all the time and knows our thoughts.  Nothing is hidden from Him.  We are all answerable to Him.  We cannot argue before Him.  Through the exemplary lives of saints and seers, He teaches us exactly how to live.  Like a drunkard who stumbles, we can never walk the straight path, bewitched by wealth, education and ego.  A stable walk requires the awareness of the Truth.

There is a tendency not to accept responsibility, but to readily blame others.  Yet, if we were to overcome the weaknesses of mind, stop indulging in slander and remain steadfast, then nothing would affect us adversely.  By making the Truth as our base, we usefully concentrate on healing and providing solace to others.

A poet reminds us that one evil word spoken within a short moment can have far reaching consequences, giving rise to suffering that lasts for centuries.  It is like a pebble thrown in pond, the ripples of which reach far and wide.  The careless remarks – the blind son of a blind father – gave rise to the epic of Mahabharata.  These were words, uttered by one of the main characters, directed at an antagonist, who misjudged a shallow pool of water for a shiny stone surface.  These seemingly harmless words originated the mighty war.

A word can redeem, and a word can hinder.  But, if we live by the words of saints, our status remains intact and cannot be lowered.  The life of Kabir Ji is an example.  In spite of people’s attempts to disrepute him, his status was high, is high, and will be high for years to come.  History is replete with many similar examples.

Our real worth is not gained through education, high rank or ego, but through humility and selflessness.  The humblest, therefore, is the highest.  To remain the highest, we have to ditch the selfish ego.

The one, who is imbued with divine love, gives up his ego.  He forsakes his ‘I’ and gives prominence to the ‘Thou’.  Sufi saint Bulle Shah says, such a person considers himself naïve, low and without merit; he owes his existence solely to the grace of God.  We have to live in the light of God-realization.

If we close our eyes, the sun does not lose its light; only we do. Hence, we must keep our gnostic eyes always open to be enlightened within and to be able to see without.  By so doing, we can never stumble.  Baba Gurbachan Singh Ji used to say:  “Both the inner and the outer eyes need to be enlightened.  If you choose to close your physical eyes, the light does not go away; it is still there.  By the same token if you choose not to use your gnostic eyes, you will not see the goodness all around.”

This means that the inner vision should yield outwardly.  Our good intentions should manifest into equally good deeds.  We are to listen sacred words with our mind and recite with our deeds.  Putting into action what we hear is the real adoption of truth.

I, therefore, pray that everyone marches on with the torch of Truth, and live their lives to accord with the teachings of the seers and sages.  May they continue to inspire others, and ask the Lord to endow them with wisdom to choose the right thoughts, words and deeds

EMS SANGAT - YOUR NEW YR. RESOLUTION, JAN 2013

EMS Sangat for the month of Jan 2013, was conducted at SNM Tracy Bhawan on Jan 13.

Topic of the sangat was: "Your New Yr. Resolution".

His Holiness New Year 2013 Message is at following link:

His Holiness shared in Barcelona (Spain) New Year Samagam:

"Today is the first blank page of the book of 365 pages". So, we need to be wise to write virtuous words and actions on each page of this book. So that we are proud of this book and leave a good example. Likewise, the entire life should be made beautiful by good deeds. Thus it is said "Swas-2 simro govind"..remember god at every moment.

Baba ji said: Make New Yr resolution with resolute mind.

Main Vichar - by Dr. Rai ji:

"One million Americans make New Year’s resolutions. That means that each year, about one-third of the US population gears up for the challenging work of self-improvement. Imagine all of this effort spent on facing our own stubborn selves, who often have one or both of our feet firmly planted in the mud. To make it more difficult, our culture is efficient and task-oriented, so it’s easy to pick a resolution and treat it as another item on our list of things to do, no matter how big of a change we are seeking. How do we put these images aside and resolve to do something based on our own values and interests?

When resolving to do more or less of something, we usually try to get our body and mind to comply to our wishes by mastering them through our willpower—and we keep this up regardless of our spirit, which might be lagging far behind. In the most popular of resolutions, getting back in shape, this means our body and mind were coordinated enough to get on the treadmill, but our heart was still at home on the couch. How do we get the heart and spirit to actively participate when we need it most?

Resolutions wouldn’t be so notorious if there wasn’t something always holding us back. Could a little spiritual development go a long way to wake us up on every level and help create lasting personal change?

These questions lead me to the wisdom Richard Potter author shares in Authentic Spirituality. Potter takes the word “self-mastery,” a guiding concept behind resolutions, and casts it in a whole new light. He relies on the wisdom of Sufi master Hazrat Inayat Khan to help expand the definiton of mastery:

“Mastery is power over oneself that is created by three things:

  1. An awakened heart
  2. self-discipline
  3. self-control
Find a safe place to heal.

The first thing needed by all seekers is to be seen. Whether we are talking about a spiritual guide or other members of a group of like-minded individuals, someone must see the person for the unique and beautiful spark of consciousness that he or she is and somehow reflect that beauty back upon the individual. Need of a Guru- Swami Vivekananda Qualities of an aspirant: Purity, Real Thurst after Knowledge, and Preservance.
Qualities of a Taecher: Must know the spirit of Scriptures, Teacher is Sinless_Must     have spiritual power in him, Motive should not be selfish.
When the divinely appointed teacher comes, serve him with child like confidence     and simplicity (page 419 of Vivakanda Book)
1.Once an individual feels seen and accepted by a spiritual mentor, spiritual group. Within this zone of safety, a numinous atmosphere exists. If this atmosphere is honored, the heart of even the most wounded person can be gently opened over time.Take charge of the process.

2.With a safe place to grow, the heart can be guided through a series of experiences designed to strengthen and expand it. These experiences are generally of two sorts. First, spiritual practices can be used as an exercise program for the heart. Meditations on themes that expand or deepen the loving nature can be incorporated into daily spiritual practice.

He further explained by sharing a story on the power of prayer:

"In the small Texas town of Mount Vernon , Drummond's Bar began construction on a new building to increase their business. The local Baptist church started a campaign to block the bar from opening with petitions and prayers.
Work progressed right up till the week before opening when lightning struck the bar and it burned to the ground.
The church folks were rather smug in their outlook after that, until the bar owner sued the church on the grounds
that the church was ultimately responsible for the demise of his building, either through direct or indirect actions or means. The church vehemently denied all responsibility or any connection to the building's demise in its reply to the court. As the case made its way into court, the judge looked over the paperwork.

At the hearing he commented, 'I don't know how I'm going to decide this, but as it appears from the paperwork we have a bar owner who believes in the power of prayer and an entire church congregation that doesn't.'

We all have reached a point where we become something else when we are in a spiritual environment, yet once we step out of a temple, church, satsang, etc. we become someone totally different: someone trying to fit into the materialistic world.

Ask yourself: Are you a spiritual person trying to fit into the materialistic world? Or are you a materialistic person trying to fit into the spiritual world?"

YOUTH SAMAGAM: BE THE CHANGE THAT YOU WISH TO SEE IN THE WORLD

Youth Samagam was conducted on Nov. 24th, 2012 at SNMTracy Bhawan. The topic of the sangat was:

"Be the change that you wish to see in the world"

or

"Saari duniya sudhar jayegi, apna agar sudhar karen hum"

Main Stage sewa was performed by "Rev. Nickpreet Sandhu ji" and stage secretary sewa was done by "Rev. Vikki Kamboj ji".

Dear Saints say with one loving voice.. DHNJ.  I would like to start of from verse from the avtar bani.. Akla socha paunch na saken, mehre di behaadi the.. Meher karey j aap swami rank bethavey gaadhi teh. .. Dear saints I know that all of you know the meaning of this but for me it translate to how I am not worthy of sitting up here in front of you but with his satguru’s grace and all your blessing I have been given this opportunity to fulfill and I would like all your blessing to be able to fulfill this task.  I would like to apoloize ahead of time for all the mistakes that I will be making today and hope that you all will be able to forgive and bless me to learn from my mistakes so I can do better do next time.  Dear saints as I asked what the topic was for this sangat I was told that it was “improve thyself before improving others”.   Dear Saints I was thinking how easy it seems to say those few words and yet how hard it is to put them to in action in our daily lives.  Dear saints we live in a world where the second we step out of our house we are ready to judge everything and anything that comes our way.   We judge anyone who is different from us and we try so hard to make the world fit our criteria.

Saints there also is a poem by Saint Kabir g he says Burrra jo kojan me challa burra na miloy koi Ja man koja apna mojse burra na koi. Saints what that means when I went to look for evil. I found no evil. When I looked in my mind there is no one worse than me. Saints the moral is before u look for evil in others look in ur head first.  Dear saints we should be aware that we point a finger at someone else we are actually pointing 3 at ourselves. Dear saints we can teach or preach to others what they need to fix because we humans are better as teachers because it makes us feel like authority but the best way to life is to become a student and to learn from that.  Learn from others mistakes, your own mistakes.  Dear saints we are given 2 ears and one mouth so we should listen and learn twice as much as we speak
Also like that shak fareed had said`; Fareeda je thu akal latheif ha kalla lik na liek apne hi girivan sar nieva karke diek. Fareed g refers to the ones who r smart – if   you are smart don’t do bad things don’t judge look inside of urself and see whats inside of you.  Theore is also a story about a woman washing her clothes saints a women drying her clothes and the front door neighbor was watching tells her husband look at her she doesn’t know to was her clothes and saints her husband remains quiet and saints the next morning the women was drying her clothes again and the neighbor said the somebody tell her how to was her clothes and this happened for a couple of days and then 1 morning she came and said finally someone taught her how to wash her clothes and the husband says no I cleaned the windows. Saints it turned it was a problem in her vision. Saints the moral of this story is fix ur self before fixing others.  Dear saints the worlds will be in the colors that we see and we should make sure that our hearts are clean then will we be only able to love and see others clearly
This takes me to my next point Thenuu saad nal kee thenu chor nal kee thu apni sambal thenu horn nal ke
Dear saints this is just a simplier way of saying let others do what they want and we should worry about our own actions.  Dear saints baba ji has a given us an example of how when a driver is driving a car he or she is most likely to get in a car accident when they are observing what other drivers are doing.  If we drive our car and pay attention to our road in front of us instead of others driving skill we should not have any trouble reaching our own destination.  But we keep on looking in other people’s lane and judge their driving skills then we lose focus on our road. Dear saints we are not here to fix others but ourselves; let others live the life that they desire and we should live the life we want.   Dear saints at the end we are not going to be asked about others peoples action.

EMS SANGAT - BE THE CHANGE THAT YOU WISH TO SEE IN THE WORLD

EMS Sangat for the month of Dec, 2012 was conducted at SNMTracy Bhawan on Dec 9th. Topic of the sangat was:

"Be the change that you wish to see in the world"

or

"Saari duniya sudhar jayegi, apna agar sudhar karen hum"

His Holiness spoke on the same topic in India:

"The poetic symposium at the 65th samagam based on the thought "Saari duniya sudhar jayegi, apna agar sudhar karen hum"..also endorsed the fact that we first need to improve ourselves if we want to improve the world. The saints also said "Bolan de naksheyan te, amlan da rang bhar de". That O Lord, bless us that our actions are a manifestation of our noble words. It is said "baney baton se agar baat, to phir baat hi kya hai". Words can be spoken by all, but what makes the difference is the acts of love, humility, generosity and charity.

Like the virtuous acts, our moral weakness also can't be kept in disguise. Both of them become obvious. A man remains away from God in the state of  'Ash' (Revelry) and ' Taish'(Aggression). The god does not need an eyewitness to make judgements. Nothing can be concealed from Him"

Rev. Dr. Rai ji explained in his vichar on following link. There are three clips. He explained that how to achieve the change by removing your blind spots, by following the true religion and reach your final destiny.

“As human beings, our greatness lies not so much in being able to remake the world – that is the myth of the atomic age – as in being able to remake ourselves.” - Mahatma Gandhi
